The Love Lock Series: The Poetic Film Chapter
Art is expression in various forms. A poem, a film, a painting, a song—all are gateways into an artist’s heart. Love is also manifested in countless ways—-in small acts of kindness, unexpected gestures, words that spill from the ink of a pen onto a paper so hastily and recklessly.
My friend and fellow poet Nina Fillari answered the question “what makes you fall in love?” in a way I suspected she would. Here is the poem she wrote in response:
she bought the script to a movie after I had casually mentioned it was my all-time favorite. little does she know, i studied the film so much i presented it at a conference. we watched it on our first movie date. the script still sits on my nightstand, fully packaged and fingerprinted with passionate hands.
A skill screenwriters must have in order to make a meaningful film is to tap into the few sensory details available to them through the form: visuals and sound. Nina captures the kind of love that speaks to those who yearn to be understood. To be known for the things you love and for someone to step into that world with you is the kind of love an artist craves.
For poets, poetry isn’t just a thing we do—it’s the way we view the world and live our lives. We clock small matters, find connections and make comparisons where they wouldn’t be likely, and see beauty in the unexpected. Finding someone who is the poetry in everything they do is exactly what makes an artist fall in love.
